Butane lighters are perhaps the most common of all lighters used as they are available everywhere and are reliable as well. Furthermore, they don’t cost much at all. These lighters are not only used by people who smoke but are often used in different households for domestic purposes.
In this article, we will take a look at the simple steps that you can follow to easily refuel your butane lighter. The first step is to buy the fuel. There are a number of different Butane cans available by a number of different brands. Choose one that suits you and meets your requirements. Find an open place to refill your lighter. It rarely causes any accidents but it is better to be safe than sorry. It is best to carry out the refueling process in an open place or a room with good ventilation.
Remove excess air. Press down on the refill lever with a screwdriver or a knife while holding it upside down so that all air gushes out of it. You’ll know it’s time to stop when the hissing noise stops. The refill lever is also known as the nipple and is located at the bottom of the butane lighter. The process of bleeding out excess air to make way for fuel is known as purging.
Use a knife or a small flat head screwdriver to adjust the height of the flame to the minimum level. The adjuster is also located at the bottom near the nipple and the minimum level is indicated by a “minus” sign. This will ensure that if you somehow accidentally ignite the lighter, the flame will be small enough to avoid any accidents.
Shake the lighter fluid can to check if it has fuel in it. If it does, proceed and secure the refill valve on the can with the refill valve on the butane lighter while holding them both in the upside down position. Make sure that both the lighter fluid can and the butane lighter are pointing straight downwards. If you hold them at an angle and refill, air will be trapped inside the lighter and the process will have to be repeated after purging.
Most lighters have a fuel level that allows you to check the level of butane. You can check that to know when to stop filling. The general practice is to fill the fuel for five seconds. If you are unsatisfied after five seconds, you can do it for a further five. Keep in mind that of the lighter is overfilled with butane, it might cause the fuel to leak and catch fire while igniting the lighter.
Take a screwdriver and adjust the flame height from the flame height adjuster at the bottom. Don’t ignite the lighter right away. Let any fumes or spilled fuel dissipate first by letting the lighter rest for a few minutes. It will also allow the filled butane to get to the room temperature. Test your lighter now and it should be working fine.
